TREE FERNS

The Tasmanian Tree Fern - Dicksonia antarctica- has become very popular in recent years for its unique appearance. Dicksonias should be hardy in much of southern Britain if sited correctly or make superb container and conservatory specimens. They require a sheltered, shady site and dislike dry conditions.A stream or waterside location is ideal Some winter protection may be needed in severe weather or for younger plants. Container specimens can be brought into the conservatory in winter. The Cyatheas are less tough although some will succeed outdoors in mild gardens and others make beautiful conservatory plants.


Cyathea brownii - A beautiful Tree Fern from Australia making a superb specimen for the conservatory although it will tolerate light frosts. The trunk and new fronds are a beautiful golden colour.£12.50
Cyathea cooperi - A handsome, slim trunked tree fern with a neat crown of dark green fronds. Suilable for sheltered gardens with shade, shelter and plenty of water in summer. £12.50
Cyathea dealbata - The Silver Tree Fern. Best known for the stunning silvery white undersides to the leaves. Hardy outdoors in sheltered sites and will tolerate several degrees of frost otherwise perfect for a shady conservatory.From £40.00
Cyathea dregei - A unique Tree Fern from South Africa which will tolerate severe frosts when large. Beautiful Cycad like foliage on a fat trunk. Slow growing. £12.50
Cyathea medullaris - The Black Tree Fern. The largest and most handsome New Zealand fern. Huge fronds with black stems. Fast growing, hardy in mild areas. From £40.00
Dicksonia antarctica - The Tasmanian Tree Fern. As described above this is the easiest and best known of these superb plants. We usually have a wide range of sizes available from young 415 year old plants without trunks at £8.95 to stems of various heights starting at £40.00.

Dicksonia fibrosa - From New Zealand, making a smaller plant than D. antarctica, but just as hardy. Thick trunks topped with a crown of bright green leaves. From £40.00
Dicksonia squarrosa - Again from New Zealand this species forms a tall, slim trunk with a crown of dark green leaves, but is less tough than other Dicksonias and prefers more moisture. Ideal for a shady greenhouse where the trunk can be kept moist. From £40.00

BAMBOOS

Bamboos are some of the most useful plants for the garden providing lush evergreen foliage in both summer and winter. Some will make outstanding specimen plants often with brilliantly coloured canes while others are useful for shelter, screening and groundcover. Whatever the size and shape bamboos bring an exotic touch to any garden. We are increasing our range of these wonderful plants all the time in many sizes from young plants to large specimens so the prices below are only a guide.


Chimonobambusa marmorea - A slow growing species with attractive lush bright green foliage and canes that turn red in autumn. Suitable as clumps or a hedge.Ht.2/3m.£15.00

PALMS

Palms are, most probably, everyone's idea of a tropical plant. They certainly provide some of the most exotic looking foliage plants that can be grown in British gardens. There are two really hardy species to grow outdoors in this country but there are also several that will stand a good chance in milder areas and central London. Palms also make perfect container specimens and some more tender species can be grown like this, placed outside for the summer and brought in for winter protection. All those listed will also make good conservatory plants provided there is some shade in the hottest months.


Archontophoenix cunninghamiana - Bangalow Palm. A fast growing palm from Australia, ideal for the conservatory although it can withstand some frost. Large pinnate leaves from a slim grey trunk.£12.50
Brahea armata - Mexican Blue Palm. As the name suggests, the world's bluest palm with beautiful fan shaped leaves covered in a blue bloom. To do well it needs full, bright sun but is quite frost hardy. Conservatory or mild areas. Slow growing. from £25.00
Butia capitata - Jelly Palm. One of the hardiest feather palms for the garden or terrace, with arching blue green leaves, it will stand several degrees of frost. Also good in containers. Best in rich soil with plenty of water in dry weather. from £25.00
Chamaerops humilis - European Fan Palm. A beautiful and very hardy palm making a low bush up to 2m high with several stout trunks from ground level. Stiff fan shaped leaves up to 60cms. Across often with a silvery sheen. Grows easily in sun or light shade and makes an excellent container plant. from £25.00
Cycas revoluta - Sago Palm. Not actually a palm but a Cycad from Japan that has been cultivated for centuries. It forms a bulbous trunk from which grow long fern like dark green leaves. It will often grow several at once then nothing for months. Best grown in a pot, although it may be hardy in mild areas. from £7.50
Livistonia australis - Australian Fan Palm. This attractive palm should be hardy in mild areas or makes an excellent conservatory specimen. Large fan shaped leaves with strongly drooping tips give it a fountain like appearance. £12.50
Phoenix canariensis - Canary Island Date Palm. Seen all over France, Spain etc. this should be hardy, once established, in milder areas and is very drought tolerant. Also makes good container and conservatory specimens. Stout trunks with long feather shaped foliage of shiny dark green. Full sun. from £12.50
Phoenix roebelinii - Pygmy Date Palm. A beautiful smaller growing palm popular for indoor use where it tolerates poor light although it will be happier in bright, indirect light. Excellent in containers which can go outside in the warmer months. from £12.50
Rhopalostylis sapida - Nikau or Shaving Brush Palm. A beautiful and unusual palm from New Zealand with long feather shaped foliage which points upwards to give it a distinct 'Shaving brush' look. Worth trying outside in mild areas with some winter protection in a moist, shady position or grow in the conservatory. from £12.50
Trachycarpus fortunei - Chusan Palm. The best known hardy palm which grows happily in most parts of Britain. Forms a tall, hairy trunk with very large fan shaped leaves up to 90cms. Across and has large sprays of yellow flowers on older plants. Makes an ideal feature for the garden or a large container but looks best with some shelter from wind which can damage the foliage. from £6.50
Washingtonia robusta - Skyduster Palm. From the west coast of the U.S.A and featuring in many T V series shot in and around Los Angeles this fast growing palm makes a superb conservatory plant.
